  7.     While much of the magazine-publishing business has been
  8. hit hard by the recession, one new publication is off to a
  9. smashing start. The Quayle Quarterly has watched its circulation
  10. leap eightfold in just a year. The Connecticut-based
  11. newsletter, dedicated to keeping "a watchful eye on the vice
  12. presidency," has become required reading for 16,000 political
  13. junkies. Co-founder Deborah Werksman insists that her magazine
  14. treats its subject fairly, and attributes its success to the
  15. ``high level of civic anxiety" about the man who could be
  16. President.

  18.     Quayle's handlers apparently take the journal seriously as
  19. well. When Werksman appeared on the Phil Donahue show, G.O.P.
  20. mediameister Roger Ailes and vice-presidential spokesman David
  21. Beckwith were on hand to defend their man as a heavyweight.
  22. Letters to the editor run both pro ("He's doing the best he can
  23. do with what God gave him") and con ("a yuppie Frankenstein").
